Cultural Revolution Revolutionizes Market
Eddy Soetriyono & Guo Fang Fang

As of May 2007, the record price paid for a painting in China was for Eulogy of the Yellow River (1972) by “Chinese Realismî painter Chen Yifei. The US$5.25 million (RMB 40.32 million) price was a bit of a surprise to buyers at the China Guardian’s Auction, earning significantly more than its presale estimate of $2.86 million to 4.16 million (RMB 22 million to 32 million).

The 143.5 x 297 cm oil-on-canvas piece, painted by Chen Yifei when he was 25, was to be used as political propaganda during the Cultural Revolution. The painting shows a rifle-bearing Red Army soldier in full uniform standing bravely on a mountain peak, bathed in golden light; below him is an impressionistically depicted stone-strewn mountain landscape with a flock of birds flying by. In the distance one can see the winding path of the Huang Ho, the second longest river in China after the Yangtze.

Although the previous record holder was not a work of Chinese Realism it was a painting by Wu Guanzhong titled Ten Thousand Kilometers of Yangtze River (1973-1974), sold for a hammer price of $4.95 million (RMB 37.95 million) in December 2006 other Chinese Realism paintings have also been fetching high prices. For example, Chairman Mao Inspecting the Guangdong Countryside (172.5 x 294.5 cm, 1972) by Chen Yanning, another propaganda painting from the Cultural Revolution, sold for $1.25 million (RMB 10.2 million) at Jiade Autumn Auction in 2005.

But collectors at China’s auction houses are after a wider spectrum of Chinese Realism paintings than just those from the Cultural Revolution. Senior artists who painted propaganda during that period including Chen Yifei, Chen Yanning, Wang Yidong, Ai Xuan, and Yang Feijun have shifted the thematic content of their work while continuing to use the techniques characteristic of Chinese Realism. Now, they simply paint different objects and themes. (See also Exhibition: “The Evolution of Chinese Realism in Akili Museum of Artî).

“The works of these artists are certainly getting a warm reception from the market, and are widely sought by collectors said Chang Tianhu of the Department of Oil Painting, Poly Auction, RRT.

Liu Gang of the Oil Painting Department, China Guardian Auction, the auctioneer who managed the sale of Eulogy, explained that “Chinese Realism started entering the market and

Hui Xin’s art addresses both the phenomenon of our constant need for visual stimuli, as well as our desire to be surrounded by objects that give us pleasure. His new paintings and sculptures bring out a dichotomy between naive happiness and adult-themed amusements.
