From China to Indonesia: The market is racing ahead

Since mid-2007, prices for works of contemporary Indonesian artists in international
auctions have been making some astonishing leaps. The artists include Nyoman Masriadi,
Rudi Mantofani, Handiwirman, Putu Sutawijaya and Yunizar among others (see: C-ARTS
launching edition, volume 00, page 76). And they are continuing to race ahead,
far outstripping their peers from Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Thailand
(see graphic). What on earth is happening? Why is it Indonesia that keeps hurtling
like a meteor?
When the contemporary fine arts of China began to become hot, a lot of Taiwanese
and Korean speculators joined the game (they generally had galleries in Beijing
and Shanghai) alongside local mainland Chinese speculators. Then we saw the arrival
of Western dealers, which continued to boost the prices of contemporary Chinese
painters – ultimately driving the prices of younger painters up as well. So it
was: their prices kept shooting up, and the market was sure to absorb everything
they put out. They worked like factories. Series they considered market successes,
they quickly reproduced; they engaged in auto-plagiarism. So busy producing, they
sometimes overlooked performance and reputation building. Yet their works kept
getting snapped up wholesale in the European and American as well as Asian markets.
Seeing the continual rise in prices for contemporary Chinese fine arts – not
always accompanied by a corresponding rise in the level of quality or reputation
– some speculators (awash in money from the Asian financial boom, especially Taiwanese
and South Koreans) shifted their horizons to Southeast Asia. And what did they
see there? That the quality of contemporary Indonesian fine artworks was high,
way out of proportion with their prices. They also saw, at the international auctions
of modern and contemporary Southeast Asian artworks, that Indonesia always seemed
to predominate, both in terms of the number of lots and the number of bidders.
