Ron Arad's Avant-garde Furniture Movement

In order to attract the attention of potential bidders, the Bonhams & Butterfield auction house featured Ron Arad’s Rover chair in the advertisements for its September 24th auction in
Los Angeles
. It was a smart choice.
Arad
, an artist, designer and architect based in
London
, holds an important place in the world of contemporary design. During the auction,
an Arad stereo sold for US$18,000, an Arad Rover two-seat sofa sold for $10,800, and an Arad Rover one-seat chair sold for $7,200. Arad’s works, which are well known for their
“non-repetitive” quality, include: Rover chair (1981), Concrete Stereo (1983), the Well Tempered chair (1986), Volume series (1988), After Spring daybed (1992), Misfits seating system (1993), Cross Your T’s chair (1996), dan Tom Vac chair (1997).
In creating the Rover chair, Arad drew on an artistic strategy first launched by avant-garde artist Marcel Duchamp with his work, Fountain (1917), which later grew into the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, and continued
to exert influence in the world of the contemporary art of the 1980s; that being
the strategy of using “ready-made found objects.” The Rover chair was made by taking the leather-covered seat of a Rover 90 (a popular automobile
from the late 1950s), and mounting it on a “tubular steel and cast iron frame.”
One of
Arad
’s more surrealistic works, which is at once subversive and difficult to accept
even now, is Concrete Stereo. Imagine a record turntable, complete with speakers and amplifier, nestled inside
chunks of concrete. “I realized that hi-fi doesn’t have to be contained in a box,
or inside a chassis,” said Arad, who concedes that he hacked into concrete the
way the sculptor Michelangelo carved into marble when he produced Concrete Stereo. In this way, according to
Arad
, an impression of durability and quality is created to match the high level
of technology in the audio equipment. Further inspiration came from his youth
in Tel Aviv, where he lived until he was 22. “I always enjoyed watching a demolition
ball in action. You could still see bomb sites and re-developments with half-flattened
houses revealing old wallpaper and fireplaces stacked one above the other.”
